Entry Garden

Oakland, CA

With a request for a more casual and safe front entry for this hillside home, we replaced a steep stairway with a meandering one. Flanked by two stucco pillars at street level, the path is framed by a series of meticulously crafted dry-stacked stone walls, which double as benches at landing areas. Varied paths provide an inviting atmosphere, and a mix of edible and drought tolerant plants provide visual interest. Lush and colorful succulents take center stage, and occasionally spill over the stone walls. Planted with edible roses, herbs, fruit trees and vines, plus a few strategically placed planter boxes, this south-facing yard is not only a pleasure to view, but a garden that gives back.
